To ensure continuous growth and become a leader in the European consumer billing market we are looking for a Legal Counsel - Compliance & Risk to join our team.
About the role
As our Legal Counsel, Compliance & Risk, you'll be a key player in making sure Billogram stays compliant while also enabling the business to move fast and grow with confidence. This is a hands-on role in the first line of defense, meaning you'll work closely with product, tech, operations, and commercial teams, not reviewing from the sidelines, but actively helping us do things right from the start.
The role combines compliance with proactive risk work. Your primary focus will be AML and financial compliance, but you'll also drive our risk management efforts (including IT and operational risk), contribute to GDPR and internal policy work, and support broader regulatory matters.
You'll be part of a small, collaborative team where ownership and impact come with the territory. You'll have real influence and a lot of variety in your everyday work.
Primary responsibilities
Day-to-day compliance support: Provide hands-on guidance and support to teams across the organization on day-to-day risk and compliance matters, including AML and KYC.
Risk identification & mitigation: Identify, assess, and support mitigation of risks across the organization, including both regulatory compliance and broader business risks.
Quarterly risk assessment: Own the process end-to-end, including setting it up, facilitating the review meetings, and translating findings into action.
External relations & regulatory reporting: Manage reporting to Finansinspektionen, act as the main point of contact for our external control function, and collaborate with our external second line compliance partner.
Business partnering: Be a sounding board to product, tech, and commercial teams, helping them navigate regulatory requirements pragmatically and integrate compliance into daily operations.
Policies, framework & training: Develop and maintain internal policies and procedures, contribute to the continuous development of Billogram's overall risk and compliance framework, drive training and awareness across the company, and support matters related to information security and data protection.
Regulatory monitoring: Stay on top of developments (e.g. GDPR, PSD2, AML, DORA, AI Act) and translate them into practical guidance for the business.
What we are looking for
As a person, you combine sharp thinking with a hands-on approach. You're not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get things done, whether that means drafting a policy, coordinating a risk assessment, or pushing back on a proposal that doesn't quite hold up.
You take ownership of your topics and drive them forward independently. You're structured and analytical, bringing order to complexity even when things shift around you. You're solution-oriented and use good judgment when balancing regulatory requirements with business needs. You know when to be pragmatic and when to stand firm, the kind of person who can push back when needed while staying constructive and collaborative.
Curious by nature, you're eager to understand how the business works and how compliance and risk can support rather than block it. You build trust quickly across teams and translate complex regulation into clear, actionable guidance.
Skills & traits which will help you succeed in this role
Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience, ideally in a compliance or risk role within fintech or payments
Education: A university degree in law is a requirement
AML/KYC expertise: Hands-on knowledge of AML/KYC frameworks is a requirement
Regulatory knowledge: Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks, such as PSD2, DORA and the AI Act, is beneficial.
Adaptability: Experience from a fast-paced, changing environment is advantageous
Broader risk: Experience or interest in broader risk areas, including IT and operational risk, is a plus
GDPR knowledge: Experience and knowledge of GDPR is a plus
Tech curiosity: Understanding of and interest in IT and technology is beneficial
Languages: Fluency in Swedish and English, both written and verbal, is a requirement
